The truth about Afghanistan: Vietnam vet reflects on the suicide epidemic

“For the first time, military suicides so far this year have outnumbered combat deaths in the Afghanistan war. Through June 3rd, 155 days into the year, 154 deaths were attributed to suicide and 127 to combat deaths, according to statistics released by the Pentagon to the Associated Press on June 13. Since 2010, the suicide rate has been the number two cause of death among active duty military, above accidents and other causes, but less than the rate of combat deaths. However, if this trend continues, this may be the first year that suicide becomes the number one cause of death among active duty servicemen, a very depressing and sobering milestone that cannot be ignored by those in charge.”
